RFC2440 Published Specifying PGP Version 4
Monday, November 30th, 1998RFC2440 has been published specifying the successor to the PGP version three format. The format is to be known as the OpenPGP message format, and is essentially the forth version of PGP. Most notable in this new standard is a move away from MD5 as the default hash algorithm for signatues and key fingerprints due to its weakening under cryptanalysis. Additionally, more data packets are hashed to increase security. Other additional features have also been added.
